Change 1: The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo appoints a new Prime Minister
According to the latest news announced by the Presidential Office of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the 15th, President Tshisekedi has appointed Sama Lukonde Kyenge as the new Prime Minister.
Lukonde, 43 years old, is the General Manager of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's National Mining Company (Gecamines) and previously served as the Minister of Sports in former President Kabila's government. It has been reported that Tshisekedi has met with Lukonde, who will begin to determine the list of members for the new government.
Currently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is advancing a new political agenda, focusing mainly on enhancing government authority, improving the business environment, strengthening infrastructure construction, increasing employment, and prioritizing anti-corruption efforts. Given Lukonde's experience, his appointment as Prime Minister may be beneficial for the country's mining sector.
Change 2: Armed groups attack Haut-Katanga Province
However, just a day before the announcement of Lukonde's appointment, an armed attack occurred in the country's mining province. The government of Lubumbashi in Haut-Katanga Province reported on the 14th that two government military camps in the area were attacked by an unknown number of armed militants, resulting in 11 deaths and several injuries. In the exchange of fire between government troops and the attackers, 4 government soldiers and 1 civilian were killed, and several others were injured; 6 attackers were killed, and another 11 were captured. Local public opinion generally believes that the attackers are from the separatist Katanga militia, which has long sought to secede parts of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, including Haut-Katanga Province.

Haut-Katanga Province, where the attack occurred, is home to the Democratic Republic of the Congo's most famous copper-cobalt belt—the Katanga Supergroup copper-cobalt polymetallic mineralization belt. According to incomplete statistics, the discovered copper-cobalt deposits have an estimated resource of about 7 billion tons, with an average copper grade of about 2%, and the copper metal resource is approximately 140 million tons. The rich mineral resources have attracted a large number of international mining companies, especially Chinese mining companies, to invest here, including Glencore, Eurasian Resources, Ivanhoe Mines, China Molybdenum, Zijin Mining, and others.
After the attack, the Chinese Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo issued a notice regarding the incident, reminding Chinese-funded institutions and citizens in the area to enhance security awareness, strengthen security measures, and avoid unnecessary outings.
In addition to the risks posed by armed groups, Ebola is also a significant potential risk in the country. On February 14, the fourth confirmed case of Ebola was found in Butembo, North Kivu Province, involving a health system worker. Sources from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo indicated that this is the first confirmed case among medical personnel.
Regarding the above news, the mining industry specifically interviewed a responsible person from a domestic mining company in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who stated that the armed attacks are currently isolated incidents that have not escalated and that the forces are too weak to affect the political situation. Additionally, Ebola has temporarily had almost no adverse impact on mining companies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in Central Africa and is known as the "Heart of Africa." It is also referred to as the world's raw material warehouse, Central Africa's gem, and a geological wonder. According to the latest data from the Investment Promotion Agency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country stretches 2,193 kilometers from east to west and 2,094 kilometers from north to south, covering an area of 2.3454 million square kilometers, making it the second largest country in Africa after Algeria.
The country is extremely rich in mineral resources, with more than 20 types of non-ferrous metals, among which copper, cobalt, zinc, diamonds, tantalum, niobium, gold, tin, manganese, and chromium have significant global reserves. The copper reserves are 75 million tons, accounting for 15% of the world's total; cobalt reserves are 4.5 million tons, accounting for 50%, making it one of the world's most important cobalt producers. Experts estimate that the tantalum and niobium mineral resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo amount to 30 million tons, accounting for 80% of the world's total. The diamond reserves are approximately 206 million carats. In addition, the Democratic Republic of the Congo also has abundant resources of iron ore and other black metals, as well as non-metallic minerals.
The coastal basin in the west, the central basin in the middle, and the vast areas around Lake Tanganyika, Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and Lake Kivu in the east contain a large amount of oil and gas resources. Currently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo's coastal basin has an oil production of 25,000 barrels per day. The confirmed offshore oil reserves are 31.5066 million barrels, and the onshore reserves are 20 million barrels; the offshore natural gas reserves are 20 billion cubic meters, and the onshore reserves are 10 billion cubic meters, with determined reserves of 14.531 million tons of asphalt sand in the Mavuma area of the central Congo Province and potential reserves of 800 million tons.
The known reserves of major mineral resources are as follows:
