The ranking of the top ten nickel mining projects under development globally has been released.

Nickel is mainly used in stainless steel, but due to the promising application prospects of high nickel cathode battery chemical materials, nickel has begun to occupy a core position in the production of electric vehicle batteries.

The global nickel market is currently in a state of oversupply, and it is expected to experience a supply shortage by 2027, which will continue to expand with the growth in demand; the changes in the market have already been reflected in nickel prices, which recently surged to the highest level since 2014. Currently, prices are approaching the critical value that market participants believe will release new supply.

According to a report by MINING.COM in March 2021, to identify the major nickel deposits that may affect the global nickel supply pattern in the future, the website and its sister company Mining Intelligence ranked the 10 largest mining projects under development globally based on the proven and predicted resource indicators of nickel (see the table below).

It is understood that the world's largest nickel suppliers are Indonesia, the Philippines, and Russia, but this yearAmong the top ten nickel mining projects under development, six are located in North America. Canada occupies three of the top five nickel mines. The four projects of NORI Clario-Clepaton, San Jiajiji, Crawford, and Mesaba are in the advanced exploration stage. Two projects in British Columbia, Canada, have entered the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) stage; the remaining projects are in the Prefeasibility Study (PFS) or Feasibility Study (FS) stage.(Compiled by the Tianjin Geological Survey Center of the China Geological Survey)
