Atlas Copco in Sweden: Rock Drilling Rigs and Drilling Machinery (Part 1)

In the late 1940s, with the rapid development of pneumatic rock drilling machinery, the efficiency of rock drilling production continued to improve. However, to increase the output power of rock drilling machinery, it was necessary to increase the piston diameter, which also led to an increase in the weight of the rock drilling machinery. Some rock drilling machines that were completely operated manually had become inadequate. In this context, the design concept of rock drilling rigs began to take shape, where one or several high-power rock drills, along with an automatic propulsion mechanism, were installed on a specially designed drill arm. The entire device was then equipped with a walking mechanism, allowing for continuous mechanized rock drilling operations.
 
In the early stages of applying rock drilling rigs to actual rock drilling operations, the rock drills, control systems, drill arm rotation, and propulsion mechanisms, as well as the walking mechanisms of the drilling rigs, were all driven and controlled by pneumatic sources. However, this type of simple structure and low-cost drilling rig not only reduced the physical labor of rock drilling workers and improved working conditions, but also, compared to manually operated pneumatic leg and handheld rock drilling machinery, the increase in the size and weight of the rock drill provided ample space for designing machinery with greater output impact power. The increase in output power of the rock drill, the ability to simultaneously drill with multiple machines on the same working face, and the good stability of the drilling rig during operation on the drilling rig—these advantages significantly improved rock drilling efficiency, increased drilling speed, and ensured straight and round blast holes, quickly earning praise in the engineering industry. The rising market demand also stimulated the research and development enthusiasm of rock drilling equipment manufacturers.
