He Lifeng, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, read Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter and Li Keqiang's directive.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River at the border of Ningnan County in Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province. It is developed and constructed by China Three Gorges Corporation, with a total investment of 220 billion yuan and a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, including 16 self-developed hydropower generator sets with the largest single-unit capacity in the world, each with a power output of one million kilowatts. The main construction of the power station started in July 2017, and the first two units have been commissioned and started generating electricity, with all units expected to be commissioned by July 2022. Once fully operational, it will become the second-largest hydropower station in the world, after the Three Gorges Project.

Officially commissioned and generating electricity today!

According to CCTV news, this morning (June 28), the first batch of units of the national major project "West-to-East Power Transmission"—the Jinsha River Baihetan Hydropower Station—was officially commissioned and began generating electricity.

CCTV reporter Zhang Wei:I am now in the underground powerhouse on the right bank of the Baihetan Hydropower Station, where the No. 14 unit and the No. 1 unit on the left bank are undergoing final preparations before commissioning. After a 72-hour trial operation, these two units will be handed over to the Baihetan Hydropower Plant and officially start generating electricity.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station has a total of 16 hydropower generator sets with a single-unit capacity of one million kilowatts, which are currently the largest hydropower units in the world. It is understood that the electricity generated by the first batch of units will mainly be sent to Jiangsu and Zhejiang, supporting the economic development of the Yangtze River Delta region.

Wang Zhilin, Director of the Baihetan Project Construction Department of the Three Gorges Group:How much electricity can such a large unit generate in one rotation? According to our calculations, each rotation of the turbine can generate about 150 kilowatt-hours, which is equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of an average household. A single unit can generate nearly 17,000 kilowatt-hours per minute.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River downstream, within the borders of Ningnan County in Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province. The total installed capacity of the power station is 16 million kilowatts, second only to the Three Gorges Project, ranking second in the world; the average annual power generation is 62.443 billion kilowatt-hours, and all units are expected to be commissioned by July 2022.

Breakthrough in one million kilowatt hydropower generator sets.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is the first to use one million kilowatt hydropower generator sets designed and manufactured entirely in China, marking a significant breakthrough in China's high-end equipment manufacturing.

What does a single-unit capacity of one million kilowatts mean? It means that one Baihetan hydropower generator set can generate one million kilowatt-hours of electricity in one hour. The entire Baihetan Hydropower Station is designed to install 16 one million kilowatt units, all of which are independently developed and manufactured in China.

Yin Guojun, Deputy General Manager of Dongfang Electric Corporation:The entire rotating component weighs over 2,600 tons. After assembly, it achieved "zero counterweight" during operation. It met the requirements for high-quality products from the first start-up. We realized our dream of high-quality one million kilowatt units.

Due to the adoption of several world-first new technologies in the Baihetan one million kilowatt units, the difficulty of its development is far greater than that of any units currently under construction or in operation worldwide, earning it the title of the "Mount Everest" of the global hydropower industry. The successful commissioning of the units will significantly promote the development of the entire hydropower industry and marks China's gradual emergence as a center for hydropower innovation in the world.

Wu Weizhang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of Harbin Electric Corporation:With the technology of one million kilowatt units, we have driven the entire industrial chain, including processing equipment, machine tools, raw materials, and supporting components. The operation of the Baihetan units marks that our technology in hydropower generation equipment has reached the world's advanced level, and in the future, when our country undertakes larger projects, the technology will be fully in our own hands.

About to be commissioned and generating electricity, the comprehensive benefits of the hydropower station are becoming apparent.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is the largest reservoir and has the most significant cascade benefits among the four cascade hydropower stations on the Jinsha River downstream, including the Wudongde, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations. As the first batch of units at the Baihetan Hydropower Station is about to be commissioned and generate electricity, its comprehensive benefits will increasingly become apparent.

According to estimates, after the Baihetan Hydropower Station is put into operation, it can save about 19.68 million tons of standard coal each year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 51.6 million tons and sulfur dioxide by 170,000 tons. At that time, the Baihetan Hydropower Station will form the world's largest clean energy corridor together with the Three Gorges Project, Gezhouba Project, and the Wudongde, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations on the Jinsha River.

Fan Xiaxia, Deputy General Manager of China Three Gorges Corporation:After the power station is put into operation, the annual power generation will reach 60 billion kilowatt-hours, providing a continuous supply of clean energy to the Yangtze River Delta region. It is a national strategic project that integrates power generation, flood control, shipping, and environmental protection.

During the construction and operation of the Baihetan Hydropower Station, not only has it improved the infrastructure conditions such as transportation and communication in the surrounding areas, but during the peak construction period, it has created about 80,000 jobs locally. After all units are put into operation, it can contribute about 15.5 billion yuan in industrial added value each year and increase local fiscal revenue by 2.9 billion yuan, becoming a driving engine for promoting local economic and social development.

Wang Zhilin, Director of the Baihetan Project Construction Department of the Three Gorges Group:Currently, the Three Gorges Corporation is coordinating the construction of a beautiful Jinsha River and fully carrying out the construction of public welfare forests in Baihetan, strengthening the important ecological civilization barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
