The first batch of units at the Jinsha River Baihetan Hydropower Station was safely commissioned and began generating electricity on the 28th. General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter, expressing warm congratulations.
In his congratulatory letter, Xi Jinping pointed out that the Baihetan Hydropower Station is a major national project for implementing the "West-to-East Power Transmission" initiative and is currently the largest and most technically challenging hydropower project under construction in the world. The world's largest single-unit capacity hydropower generator set, with a power output of one million kilowatts, has achieved a significant breakthrough in China's high-end equipment manufacturing. All builders and all parties have demonstrated the spirit of striving for excellence, climbing to new heights, and selfless dedication, working together to overcome difficulties and contributing to the construction of major national projects. This fully demonstrates that socialism is achieved through hard work, and the new era is created through struggle.
Xi Jinping hopes that all builders and all parties will coordinate and promote the subsequent work of the Baihetan Hydropower Station, making greater contributions to achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, and promoting a comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development.
Li Keqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, made a directive pointing out that we must adhere to Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as guidance, earnestly implement the decisions and deployments of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, adhere to the new development concept, always prioritize quality and safety, vigorously promote the spirit of craftsmanship, strengthen technological innovation, and steadily and orderly advance the subsequent project construction, carefully organize the operation and management of the power station, provide follow-up support for resettled people, strengthen the protection and restoration of the reservoir ecosystem, and strive to achieve an organic unity of economic, social, and ecological benefits, making new contributions to better promote regional coordinated development, better ensure national energy security, and better serve the improvement of people's living standards.
The commissioning ceremony for the first batch of units at the Jinsha River Baihetan Hydropower Station was held on the 28th via video link, with the main venue in Beijing and a sub-venue at the construction site of the Baihetan Hydropower Station.
Han Zheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, attended the ceremony at the main venue in Beijing and announced the official commissioning of the first batch of units at the Baihetan Hydropower Station. He Lifeng, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, read Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter and Li Keqiang's directive.
The Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River at the border of Ningnan County in Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province. It is developed and constructed by China Three Gorges Corporation, with a total investment of 220 billion yuan and a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, including 16 self-developed hydropower generator sets with the largest single-unit capacity in the world, each with a power output of one million kilowatts. The main construction of the power station started in July 2017, and the first two units have been commissioned and started generating electricity, with all units expected to be commissioned by July 2022. Once fully operational, it will become the second-largest hydropower station in the world, after the Three Gorges Project.
Officially commissioned and generating electricity today!
According to CCTV news, this morning (June 28), the first batch of units of the national major project "West-to-East Power Transmission"—the Jinsha River Baihetan Hydropower Station—was officially commissioned and began generating electricity.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River downstream, within the borders of Ningnan County in Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province. The total installed capacity of the power station is 16 million kilowatts, second only to the Three Gorges Project, ranking second in the world; the average annual power generation is 62.443 billion kilowatt-hours, and all units are expected to be commissioned by July 2022.

Yin Guojun, Deputy General Manager of Dongfang Electric Corporation:The entire rotating component weighs over 2,600 tons. After assembly, it achieved "zero counterweight" during operation. It met the requirements for high-quality products from the first start-up. We realized our dream of high-quality one million kilowatt units.
Due to the adoption of several world-first new technologies in the Baihetan one million kilowatt units, the difficulty of its development is far greater than that of any units currently under construction or in operation worldwide, earning it the title of the "Mount Everest" of the global hydropower industry. The successful commissioning of the units will significantly promote the development of the entire hydropower industry and marks China's gradual emergence as a center for hydropower innovation in the world.
