Collaboratively improving carbon reduction and environmental benefits across the entire steel industry chain has increasingly become an important aspect of Rio Tinto's sustainable development. Recently, Rio Tinto further deepened its cooperation with Tsinghua University and committed to investing 30 million yuan over the next five years to support the Tsinghua-Rio Tinto Resource, Energy, and Sustainable Development Joint Research Center (Joint Research Center) in conducting related research.

In the future, the Joint Research Center will continue to focus on sustainable development issues and prioritize topics related to supporting Rio Tinto's 2050 net-zero emissions strategy. At the same time, the research center will also support the collaboration between Rio Tinto, China Baowu Steel Group, and Tsinghua University to jointly improve carbon reduction and environmental benefits across the entire steel industry chain.

It is understood that Rio Tinto and Tsinghua University established the Joint Research Center in 2012, aiming to gather top experts from China and internationally to jointly research, innovate, and share best practices in the field of sustainable development. Over the past eight years, the Joint Research Center has published nearly 90 academic papers in the fields of energy, resources, and sustainable development, and has drafted and submitted multiple relevant policy recommendations each year.

Rio Tinto Group CEO J-S Jacques and He Jiankun, Vice Chairman of the National Climate Change Expert Committee of China and former Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University, jointly witnessed the signing ceremony of the renewed cooperation agreement in Beijing.

J-S Jacques stated that the results of the Tsinghua-Rio Tinto Resource, Energy, and Sustainable Development Joint Research Center not only help Rio Tinto gain a deeper understanding of China but also provide profound insights for Rio Tinto's long-term strategic considerations in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Rio Tinto is committed to contributing to climate change solutions, and continuing the long-term strategic cooperation with Tsinghua University, a top academic institution in China, is an important measure to fulfill this commitment. As China commits to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, the research projects conducted by the Tsinghua-Rio Tinto Joint Research Center may become even more significant in achieving China's long-term strategic goals.

Tsinghua University Vice President You Zheng stated: "We will strive to make the Joint Research Center a world-class research institution for energy, resources, and sustainable development issues, as well as one of the most influential think tanks in China. We hope to continue working hand in hand with Rio Tinto to achieve complementary advantages, mutual benefits, and common development, contributing to the sustainable development of human society."
